Has anyone got a scythe?
The allotment project begins. I sorted out a full plot earlier today and should start work on it later this week.
It currently looks like this-

Which is...... challenging. There also appears to be some piece of art fashioned from an old immersion tank-

There already appear to be raspberries, which I might try to keep-

And the plot next door has a neat shed that thinks it's a tree, or vice versa-

The plan is to keep the allotment as nearly organic as possible. The fact that it's been abandoned for a year or so is a help in that respect as it therefore doesn't have a recent history of chemical use. I hope to get some small crop from it this year, but it's the second and third years when Ican really expect to see results.
The first job, obviously, is going to be clearing as much of that growth and rubbish as possible. If anyone would like to help I can pay them in chutney.

Suburbia could be the saviour of biodiversity.
The study of just one Leicester garden designed to attract wildlife recorded more than 2,200 animal and plant species.
A species of lichen - an organism that is a combination of fungus and algae - never previously recorded, along with an extremely rare moth which only breeds on juniper bushes, were discovered by the Bugs (Biodiversity in Urban Gardens in Sheffield) project.

Green ways to deal with ants.
For ants inside the home, use a talc-based baby powder.
"It has to be Johnson & Johnson," Cook said. "Nobody's sure just why, but other brands don't work."

Garden Archaeology
It's a decorative garden that's to be resurrected, but the unearthing of the grand garden at Kenilworth Castle is still and interesting project.

Allotment, interrupted
The allotment plans have stalled slightly. The patch Damian and I most liked isn't, as we had thought, abandoned now that its gardener has paid up for another year. Now we have to go along some Sunday and hope there's someone there to arrange a plot with. The problem is this Sunday we're going to be tramping up Sca Fell Pike. It looks like planting season could be over before we get our hands on some land.
Meanwhile- a history of allotments and the Allotments Regeneration Initiative.

Wild Things
A fifth of British wild plants are at risk of extinction, according to a recent survey. Mostly they are threatened by changes in agriculture, and the onus is on farmers to reverse the trend, but I'm sure anyone with a big enough garden could set some of it aside as a mini meadow and do their bit.

Threatened flora
Among plants not before classified as at risk but now threatened are:
Ranunculus arvensis - corn buttercup (critically endangered). A very attractive annual buttercup with small yellow flowers, it came to Britain with Roman farmers.
Papaver argemone - prickly poppy (vulnerable). A small, brightly flowered poppy which has not yet made the jump to waysides and road verges as the common poppy has.
Silene noctiflora - night-flowering catchfly (vulnerable). Its creamy-white flowers are semi-closed during the day, but at night reopen fully and emit a strong scent to attract insects.
Astragalus danicus - purple milk-vetch (endangered). Found along the east coast from Scotland to Lincoln and East Anglia.
Euphrasia anglica - eyebright (endangered). Its tiny white flowers are blotched with yellow and purple like a bruised eye. Compresses and tinctures from it were used to treat many eye disorders.
Monotropa hypopitys - yellow bird's-nest (endangered). An odd-looking perennial herb that lives on dead and decaying plant material in the soil.
Polystichum lonchitis - holly fern (vulnerable). An evergreen alpine fern that is small but long-lived. Small populations in Wales and the Lake District; more frequent in the Scottish uplands and western Scotland.
Cuscuta epithymum - dodder (vulnerable). An annual, rootless, twining and scrambling herb which is a parasite, attaching itself to its host by small suckers that remove water and nutrients.
Gentianella campestris - field gentian (vulnerable). A biennial or annual herb with attractive, purply-blue flowers. It is locally common in northern England and Scotland, but absent from most of south and central Britain.

Planting timetable
One step closer to getting a Spinneyhead allotment. I should hear back about a plot within a week. Judging by the state of the allotments Damian and I looked at today the first job will be cleaning out the weed and other sprawling plants (securing a shed is high on the to-do list as well). The plan is to clear a row a week and plant a crop or two in each one so that there'll be a rolling crop as stuff matures.
Pages like this one tell me I should be planting beetroot, swede, dwarf French and runner beans as well as potatoes. Further research should give me hints for plants to start on the windowsill for future transplanting.
I'm all excited, I want the adventure to begin.

Food on the streets
As Germany goes through hard times, a new cookbook is encouraging its citizens to make the most of foods, such as dandelion, growing wild in their pavements and as weeds. Meanwhile the Hartz IV cookbook, which contains austerity recipes from the First World War, has become a bestseller.
At least I'm only advocating foraging for fun and variety. Any savings are a bonus.

The recipe for rucola or rocket pesto comes with a useful tip: “Rucola is a robust weed and you should be able to find some growing on the fringes of the car park in front of the job centre.”

Allotment
Dig as a blog is going to have to walk the walk. I can't just report on stuff that I find, I'm going to have to get stuck in and, quite literally, get my hands dirty.
It was with that in mind that last night I went to the Manchester Allotments home page and had a look around. It's a straightforward, clean little site with a useful map of allotments in the North, Centre and South of the city. I found a few likely locations in the Rusholme/ Fallowfield area and decided to call around.
I was in luck and the second person I called (first I got through to) said his allotment had some free plots, though they might not be in very good condition. So I'm off on Sunday to check out the state of the plots and probably offer to take one over.
Now I need a proper spade.

Fine and Dandy
Dandelions are another great item to forage for. They're best before the flowers blossom, which means that it's already too late around here to go looking for this year's crop, so I'll just have to remember for next year.

Cardoon
We were pondering the other day whether Burdock was a real plant and, if so, just how to go about making Dandelion and Burdock. This article answers the first question, at least. It seems the traditional Sicilian way of eating Burdock, or Cardoons, is to boil them to remove any bitterness then dip them in egg and fry.
