The bike always wins

There was a bus-bike-car-train race from Heaton Chapel to Manchester Town Hall last week. As usual, the bike won.

MySociety travel-time maps

MySociety is a not-for-profit group that runs several projects. One of them has been mapping travel times in London. they've updated these maps recently to make them interactive. You can map public transport travel times against average cost of houses to find the best places to live (based upon certain work addresses). They also have a map showing where it is faster to cycle rather than take public transport assuming you're heading for teh Department of Transport (There are very few places where public transport is faster).

Let's cut car use

Lynsey Hanley in the Guardian has a go at those drivers too stubborn or dumb to get out of their cars. Obviously a bunch of the people she's criticising have posted the usual nonsense about the horrors of public transport and how their cars save them so much time.

I have one suggestion to everyone who says their commute takes only 20 or 30 minutes by car, especially whoever complained about finding time for the gym if they used public transport.

Get a bike.

Unless you're popping straight off your drive onto an empty motorway or A road and then getting straight off it into the works car park I could do your journey just as fast on my bike. Faster in some cases. And I wouldn't need to go to the gym after work. A decent commuter bike would pay for itself in four months or so.

In fact, it probably wouldn't take me much longer to do the journey on foot in most towns.

So I'll issue a challenge to you half hour commuters. Get on your bike one day. If you don't have a bike, borrow one. If you're scared about riding on the roads ask someone who does it regularly to show you the ropes. And bear in mind that the rest of the time you're one of the people who makes cycling scary.

Once you start cycling to work you'll wonder why you ever did it any other way.

The Critical Commute

Taking place on the morning of the last Friday of the month, the Critical Commute could be a good way for anyone to start the day who plans to later go on to the Critical Mass.

Cycle Hero

The CTC's new pro-cycling ad for cinemas.

I found the link at the end of this article. More than four million people use their cars to drive less than three mile sto work. Unless they're disabled, these people deserve all the congestion charging they get, consider it a tax on stupidity.

Braving the Traffic

Telegraph blogger Bryony Gordon is thinking about cycling to work. Head over and tell her positive things about two wheeled commuting.

Death wish? Cycling in LA

Telegraph foreign correspondent Catherine Elsworth is taking her life in her hands and cycling around Los Angeles- possibly the most car biased city in the world. It's all quite exhilarating until a broken manhole cover trips you up.

Bike to Work- in Mexico City

Officials in Mexico City are to be encouraged to cycle to work, or use public transport, once a month. The mayor is also planning tax breaks for companies that encourage similar behaviour in their employees.
