Government consults on new cycle design guidelines

From the CTC's weekly email newsletter-

The Government is now consulting on the long-awaited revision to the guidelines on 'cycle-friendly infrastructure' guidelines. While the document, re-titled as 'Cycle Infrastructure Design' is mostly positive, CTC is concerned that it will be widely ignored unless the Government ensures local councils understand them clearly. CTC's Campaigns Manager Roger Geffen said: "The guidelines are a good start. However the Government now needs to make sure that Councils really understand and follow the proposed 'hierarchy of provision', which rightly says that the first options which Councils should consider are ways to reduce the volume or speed of motorised traffic." The consultation document is at www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/infrastructuredesign/. An outline of CTC's response is at: http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4920

Cycle Hero

The CTC's new pro-cycling ad for cinemas.

I found the link at the end of this article. More than four million people use their cars to drive less than three mile sto work. Unless they're disabled, these people deserve all the congestion charging they get, consider it a tax on stupidity.

Victory over the Highway Code

After lobbying organised by the Cyclist Touring Club the Department for Transport has changed the proposed wording of the Highway Code. There have been 40 rules changed, but the important ones are rules 61 and 63, where the previous wording had implied that cyclists must always use cycle lanes and facilities. These guidelines could have been used to suggest that a cyclist was at fault if they were hit whilst not riding in a cycle lane, reducing compensation and the penalty incurred by the driver.
